Discovering the Desire to Dive

To me, diving was something I was always interested in, but it became more than just curiosity when I saw it as another chance to join my girlfriend on one of her travel journeys. I had always been fascinated by diving but never seriously considered doing it because, honestly, it felt expensive. And let’s be real – it is very expensive.

My diving journey began when I asked my girlfriend’s instructor to be my instructor as well. To make things more fun, I convinced a friend to join me for our first lesson. At first, it was terrifying. I had no idea what it would feel like or how breathing underwater even worked. Plus, I’ve always had breathing issues—constantly feeling out of breath even on land—so I was filled with questions:

  • What if I can’t breathe underwater?

  • What if I use up more oxygen than everyone else?

  • What if I run out of air earlier and force the group to end their dive prematurely?

Overcoming the First Fears

Despite all these fears swirling in my mind, I decided to give it a try. Surprisingly, I wasn’t the worst student in the class – my friend was struggling more than I was (thanks, buddy!). Our instructor said I did okay. I managed to stay calm underwater, complete the required tasks, and even started to feel a tiny bit of confidence building. Slowly but surely, I began to enjoy it.

Learning Focus Underwater

Diving requires an incredible amount of focus, almost like driving a car on the highway. You can’t just stop whenever you want or pull over on the side. You have to maintain buoyancy, be mindful of what you touch to avoid getting stung, and stay aware of your surroundings. At first, it feels overwhelming, but with time, it becomes second nature. Instead of breezy winds, you’re surrounded by a calming silence and the stunning magnificence of the ocean. This tranquility started to grow on me, and I found myself falling in love with the activity.

Setting a Goal: Becoming a Rescue Diver

One day, my instructor introduced me to another, more experienced instructor named Allen. Allen asked us a profound question: “What do you want from diving? What’s your goal here?” While my friend wasn’t sure, my answer came easily. I wanted to become a rescue diver. That initial fear I felt before starting this journey still lingered, and I wanted the skills to save myself and others from similar fears. Allen told me it was a long road, not just about achieving the certification but gaining the experience to be truly competent. Still, I was determined. My goal was clear: Rescue Diving, here I come.

Facing Challenges and Growing Stronger

Of course, reality has a way of humbling us. I hadn’t even passed the first test yet. On our second dive, which was also the testing phase, the ocean decided to challenge me. I had issues with my regulator and couldn’t breathe properly. While trying not to panic, I couldn’t fix the problem and remained on the surface, unable to dive. My instructor, with his no-nonsense attitude, told me to “relax and dive.” Relax? How could I relax when I couldn’t breathe properly? But after several attempts and swapping equipment with my instructor, I managed to dive. Once underwater at six meters, I realized I could breathe again. Though I never figured out the exact issue with my regulator, I was relieved and pushed through the tasks to complete my Open Water course.

That day was overwhelming. It was only two dives, but it felt like I had experienced life and death. Little did I know, this was just the beginning. Diving is challenging but also deeply rewarding. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow while exploring the beauty of the underwater world. For anyone who’s skeptical or scared, I’m here to answer your questions and hopefully ease your fears. Trust me when I say it’s worth it.
